Come va, New York? Ho scelto di parlarvi da un riquadro perchè penso che siamo piuttosto condizionati ad ascoltare le persone nel momento in cui si trovano in uno spazio quadrato. In questo momento tutti vogliono incolpare la musica, vogliono dare la colpa ai film. Ma ci siamo dimenticati che nei nostri salotti abbiamo un tipo morto appeso ad un albero, e che è qualcosa che abbiamo idolatrato per tutta la vita. Se si pensa al crocefisso, è il più grande pezzo di merchandise nella storia dell'umanità. Ho sempre trovato che fosse piuttosto interessante il fatto che non ci siamo mai seduti e ne abbiamo discusso al telegiornale.
E mi chiedevo anche perchè a nessuno importi quando è un adulto a commettere qualche atto di violenza insensata. Non vogliono sapere un motivo. E' solo quando è un bambino a commetterlo. Sai, Oswald: sì. ma lui era un comico. Timothy McVae? Beh, lui è pazzo. Bill Clinton, perchè ha sparato tutte quelle bombe e ucciso tutti quei stranieri? Oh beh, lui è il presidente ed è così che si fa in America.
Ma penso a ciò che ha davvero cominciato a confondere la gente oggi, ed il perchè siamo in questo stato di caos e di insensata apprensione. Si tratta di adolescenti bianchi. E' questo il vero enigma: perchè sono pazzi? Fanno parte della classe media, sono bianchi, sono viziati, i loro genitori comprano per qualcuno di loro anche pistole. Sai, quale ragione hanno per diventare pazzi? E' forse perchè sanno che l'America è una bugia? Perchè non li facciamo mai sentire di essere bravi abbastanza? Sai? Non sono mai abbastanza bravi per la borsa di studio, per l'auto, per la ragazza. Mai abbastanza bravi per diventare famosi per quindici minuti.
E' con la prima gara all'asilo che si comincia? Quando la mamma sta urlando "Prendi il nastro bianco, prendi il nastro bianco!" "Oh, ho ottenuto il nastro giallo.." e la mamma: "Oh beh, va bene, va bene così". E poi le partite di calcio al liceo, con le madri tifose che urlano "Falli fuori! Uccidili!". Ed è qui che ricompare l'antica Roma. Hai le mamme, hai i ragazzi, vogliono sangue, e ce l'hanno sempre. Non è una novità. La gente fa finta che sia qualcosa nuovo di zecca, solo perchè Maury Povich, o Fox News, o Montel Williams dicono che i tempi sono violenti.
La cosa che mi ha alquanto colpito è che sia stato evitato ed ignorato perchè la gente vuole sempre puntare il dito contro qualcuno come me perchè sono un bersaglio facile e ovvio dal momento che ho l'aspetto di qualcuno che causa problemi; e lo faccio, ci provo perlomeno. Ma credo che proprio come il Gladiatore, è l'eroe sportivo ad essere l'icona nello status quo, più di quanto Elvis o James Dean siano mai stati. E 'nel Wheaties, in McDonalds, nel film, ha anche il suo talk show. Beh, lo ha fatto in alcuni casi.
Cosa dice questo ai bambini? Se ci pensiamo per un secondo: Sport. La prestanza fisica è più importante dell'intelligenza, della conoscenza? E' questo non solo incoragiare l?america ad essere più violenta, ma anche più stupida? Stiamo andando indietro sulla scala evolutiva? In realtà mi piacerebbe controllare, ma non è possibile perchè i creazionisti l'hanno portata via. Non puoi più nemmeno trovare la scala evolutiva oggi.
Credo che tutti crescendo sanno che sono gli atleti a governare la scuola. Guardi un film come the Outsiders o Heathers. I secchioni, i gettati via, i pensatori, quelli che sognano ad occhi aperti: sono questi quelli che vengono picchiati, sono questi i ragazzi che non possono bere alla fontanella dell'acqua al giorno d'oggi. Nessuno lo sta segnalando, nessuno combatte per i propri diritti civici. E poi.. Siamo sorpresi del perchè sono pazzi o finiscono morti. Perchè la violenza? Sai America, sei stata tu a crearli, cosa ti aspettavi?
Guardate Woodstock per esempio. Dovevano essere tutti Hippy, amore e Pc e United Colours of Benetton. Mentre ciò che hanno avuto sono state sommosse, fuoco e stupri. E parte di questo è il fenomeno che per me è collegato allo sport, ed è quando il rap ed il rock hanno cominciato a mescolarsi e abbiamo creato questo ossimoro chiamato rock atletico. Per me è un po 'come .. La gente arriva in un gruppo che non capisce, ma sono intelligenti abbastanza per capire che sono le persone più stupide lì, e questo li fa impazire. Penso ciò sia quello che Woodstock è stato, avevi questi ragazzi bianchi in divisa da football stavano cercando di fare del rock and roll uno sport violentando ragazze e picchiandosi a vicenda. E tutti erano sorpresi " .. Perché Perché?Oh..E 'la musica, è la musica"
Credo che parte dell'evoluzione dell'uomo sia sempre stato competere. Penso che i genitori vi stiano spingendo i figli in particolar modo attraverso lo sport.
Hai O.J. Simpson, ma lui non può essere colpevole, lui è un eroe americano. Eravamo sul punto di mettere la sua faccia su una banconota da tre dollari. E poi questo tipo, Ray Caruth , questo notevole ricevitore dell'NFL, accusato di aver ucciso la sua fidanzata incinta. La gente si chiede perché, "Perche 'l'ha fatto?" Ma non importa a nessuno. Ray Lewis, il linebacker dell'NFL, accusato di duplice omicidio in Atlanta la domenica del Superbowl, il giorno più violento dell'anno, con la pausa pubblicitaria più costaosa. Certo, è fuori su cauzione. E 'accusato di aver ucciso due persone ed è fuori su cauzione. Hai Charles Manson seduto in prigione per cospirazione, condannato a morte. E lasci semplicemente i ragazzi a piedi per le strade perché lui è un eroe sportivo.
Una storia che mi ha colpito e mi ha fatto pensare riguardo a questo argomento, è successa qualche anno fa. C'era questo adolescente, un punk-rocker, che è stato investito in un parcheggio iHop da un atleta bianco e la sua fidanzata nella Cadillac di papà. E questo ragazzo è morto perchè aveva un aspetto diverso ed è stato investito da un pezzo di merda che lo odiava e che lo aveva sempre maltrattato. Ed hai una situazione in cui ci sono sei ragazzini con il piercing al naso e trenta atleti, che sono i ragazzi popolari a scuola. E li stanno maltrattando, e chiamando froci e li stanno chiamando.. in ogni modo. Quindi questa cosa succede, questo tizio uccide un ragazzo, ed è chiaramente colpevole, e la sua colpa è riconosciuta. E indovinate dov'è ora questo atleta all'americana? E' in un college. L giuria ha ritenuto che il punk-rocker meritava di morire perchè aveva l'aspetto che aveva. E non è solo stato ucciso, ma durante il processo è stato ammazzato nuovamente nel momento in cui hanno criticato il suo modo di vivere. Perché lui non indossava una camicia Tommy-Hilfiger e pantaloni kaki. E poi l'assassino è stato anche applaudito alla laurea perché era una stella del calcio: Il sogno americano. Forte. Normale. Non ha mai trascorso un giorno in carcere.
Allora chi incolpiamo? Tutti vogliono dire, c'è troppa violenza, c'è troppa violenza oggi. ... bene, ci siamo dimenticati della guerra civile, della Bibbia, di Shakespeare? La violenza non è qualcosa di nuovo. E non credo nemmeno che vedere la violenza sia qualcosa di nuoco, non è questo il problema. quello che penso sia il problema più serio è che mostrare la violenza come una soluzione per risolvere i problemi sta mandando un cattivo messaggio ai ragazzi che crescono.
Tornando indietro ai Western: L'Eroe uccide il cattivo, salva la giornata. I bambini sono cresciuti nella seconda guerra mondiale e hanno imparato che la distruzione totale è la risposta. E penso che sia qui che è cominciata una cultura morente, e una cultura morente distrugge tutto ciò che tocca. E hanno trasmesso orgogliosamente questi valori. "Abbiamo vinto la guerra!" Ma dannato quell'Hitler, il Genocidio e tutte le orribili cose che ha fatto. Noi abbiamo lanciato la bomba, ma è diverso perchè siamo americani e crediamo in Dio.
Ecco, questo è il punto in cui creano quella che mi piace chiamare "la fascia di Dio". Quando hai un problema, ti metti la fascia di Dio:"Oh, il mio disco è sporco e violento, ma ho appena vinto un Grammy, perciò vorrei ringraziare Dio", oppure "Qualcuno ha appena ucciso mia figlia", e tutti sono come "Oh!" "Ma va bene, lei è con Dio adesso" "Oh, va bene.". O "Hai ucciso qualcuno." "Oh, ma io credo in Dio ora, quindi va bene" e tutte le altre persone con le fasce di Dio vedono e dicono "Oh, è come noi. Va bene, lasciamolo andare".
Quindi, cattivi genitori fanno i bambini cattivi. Questo è il mio modo di vedere le cose. Ecco perché ho posto sul mio sito la domanda "E' l'intrattenimento per adulti ad uccidere i nostri figli o è uccidere i nostri figli che intrattiene gli adulti?". Penso che sia questa la domanda che dobbiamo porci oggi e che ti devi chiedere ogni volta che guardi le telecamere affamate sulla scena del crimine o ad un funerale o allo schianto aereo quando intervistano le vittime. 24 ore di filmati a guardare il tipo che si fa saltare le cervella sull'autostrada per Los Angeles.
Sono dentro ad un quadrato al momento. Voi mi state guardando in uno schermo, io vede me stesso su un monitor. Ci sediamo di fronte alla TV, e siamo la TV. Siamo una copia che fissa una copia e una copia e una copia. E 'come il ragazzo su Jerry Springer che guarda il monitor per vedere se vede se stesso e diventa un ciclo continuo. I've always found that to be kind of interesting that we haven't really sat down and talked about that on the news.
And I also wondered why nobody cares when an adult commits some senseless act of violence. They don't want to have a reason why. It's only when a kid does it. You know, Oswald: well, he was a comic. Timothy McVae? Well he's crazy. Bill Clinton, Why'd he shoot all those bombs and kill all those foreigners? Oh, well he's the president and that's the american way.
But I think what's really begun to confuse people now, and why we're in this state of chaos and PC non-sensical uptightness. It's white teenagers. That's the real enigma: Why are they mad? They're middle class, they're white, they're spoiled, Their parents even buy some of them guns. You know.. what do they have to be mad about? Is it because they know America's a lie? Is it because we make them feel like they're never good enough. You Know? They're never good enough for the scholarship, for the car, for the girl. Never good enough to be famous for fifteen minutes.
Is it the first race in kindergarden where it starts? When mom's yelling, "Get the White Ribbon, Get the White Ribbon!" "..oh, I got the Yellow ribbon.." and mom's "Oh well.. you know.. It's okay It's okay" And then the highschool football games and soccer moms screaming "Kill em, Kill em!" When ancient Rome reappears. You got moms, you got kids they all want blood, and they always have. It's not new. People pretend like just because Maury Povich, or Fox News, or Montel Williams says that Times are violent, that it's brand New.
The thing that kinda struck me that has been avoided and ignored because people always want to point to finger at someone like me because I'm an obvious, and easy target because I look like I cause problems, and I do, and I try to. But I think just like the Gladiator, the Sports Hero is the icon in the status quo. You know, more than Elvis or James Dean ever was. He's in the Wheaties, in McDonalds, he's in the Movie, He even has his own talk show. Well, He did it in some cases.
What is that saying to kids? When we think about it for a second. Sports. Physical Prowess is more important than intelligence, knowledge? Is that encouraging America to be not only more violent, but dumber? Are we going backwards on the evolution chart? I actually would like to check, but it's gone because the creationists have taken it away. You can't even find the evolutionary chart anymore.
I think everyone knows growing up, that Jocks ruled the school. You look at a movie like the Outsiders, or Heathers. The Nerds, the Throw-aways, the Thinkers, the Daydreamers: These are the beaten, These are the kids that can't drink out of the waterfountain today. Noone's announcing, or standing up for they're civil rights.And then.. Are we suprised why they're mad or why they end up dead. Why the violence? You know.. you made them America, what do you expect?
Look at Woodstock for example. They're all supposed to be hippies, and love and PC, and united colours of Benetton. But instead they got riots, fire and Rape. And part of it is this phenomenon to me that is related to sports, and it's when Rap and Rock began to mix and we created this oxymoron called Jock Rock. To me it's kinda like.. People come to a party that they don't understand, but they're just smart enough to know that they're the stupidest people there, so that makes them mad. I think that's what Woodstock was, is you had these white kids in football jersey's trying to make Rock and Roll a sport by raping girls and beating eachother up. And everybodies suprised, you know.. Why Why? It's the Music, It's the Music.
I think part of Man's evolution is always to compete. I think parents are driving their kids particularly through sports.
You got O.J. Simpson, well he can't be guilty, He's an american hero. We were just about to put his face on a Three dollar bill. And then this Ray Caruth guy, this NFL wide reciever, charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend. People, do they ask why, "Why'd he do it?" But noone cares. Ray Lewis, this NFL linebacker, charged with double homicide in Atlanta on Superbowl Sunday, the Most Violent Day of the Year, with the most expensive commercial time. Of course, He's out on bail. He's charged with murdering two people and he's out on bail. You've got Charles Manson sitting in prison for conspiracy, sentenced to death. And you just let the guys walk on the streets because he's a sports hero.
One story that really struck me and got me thinking about this, was a Few years ago. There was this teenage punk-rocker kid who was run down in an iHop parking lot by a White Jock and his girlfriend in Dad's cadillac. And this boy died because he looked different, and he was run down by a drunk piece of shit that hated him, and had always picked on him. And it's a situation where you've got six kids who got their noses peirced and you've got 30 jocks, who are the popular kids at school. And they're pickin on them. They're calling them Fags, they're calling them.. whatever. So this thing happens, this guy kills this kid, and is cleary guilty, his guilt is admitted. And guess where this all-american athlete is? He's in college. The Jury felt that the punk rocker deserved to die because he looked the way he did. And not only was he killed, but then in the trial he was killed again because they critisized his lifestyle. Because he didn't wear a Tommy-Hilfiger shirt and Khaki pants. And then the killer was even applauded at graduation because he was a football star: The American Dream. Strong. Normal. He never spent a day in prison.
So who do we Blame? Everybody wants to say, There's too much violence, there's too much violence today. ... well........ Did everyone forget about the civil war, the Bible, or Shakespeare? Violence isn't brand new. And I don't even think seeing violence is Brand New, that's not the problem. What I think is the more serious problem is that seeing violence as a solution to solve a problem is what is sending a bad message to kids growing up.
Even going back to a Western: The Hero kills the villain, and saves the day. Childeren grew up in World War Two and they learned that total violence is the answer. And I think that that's where a dying culture began, and a dying culture kills everything that it touches. So these kids grew up learning this. They pass these values down with pride "We Won the War!" But Damn that Hitler, Genocide and all those terrible things he did.
We dropped the bomb, but that's different because we're american's and we believe in god.
So that's where they create what I like to call the 'God Bandaid' That's when you got a problem and stick the God Bandaid on. "Oh, my Record's dirty and violent, but I just won a grammy. So I wanna thank god"
Or "Someone just killed my daughter" and they're like "Oh" "but it's okay she's with God now" "Oh, okay."
Or "You killed somebody." "Oh, but I believe in god now, so it's okay" And all the other people with the God bandaids see that and they go "Oh he's like us. That's okay, let's let him go.
So, bad parents make bad kids. That's the way I look at it. That's why I asked the question, put this up on my website: " Is Adult entertainment killing out childeren, or is killing our childeren entertaining adults?". I think that's the question that we have to ask ourselves today, and you have to ask yourself every time you watch the hungry cameras at the crime scene or at the funeral or at the plane crash interviewing the victim. 24 hour footage watching the guy blow his brains out on the L.A. freeway.
I'm in a square right now. You're looking at me on the screen, I'm looking at myself on the monitor. We sit infront of the TV, and we are the TV. We're a copy staring at a copy and a copy and a copy. It's like the guy on Jerry Springer staring at the monitor to see if he sees himself and it becomes a loop. Because you see it, and you see yourself again and again and again. So eventually it's a Xerox that's so degenerated we don't know which came first. And that's where we are. That's what I'd like to leave you with.
